Haruto Nakamura

Haruto Nakamura is Principal Structural Engineer at the Osaka campus, where he leads hull design for Halcyon's largest ships. He designed the segmented spine of the Leviathan Ore Hauler, which lets the 880-metre vessel flex under a 140,000-tonne ore load without fatigue cracking.

Haruto is currently responsible for the 2.4-kilometre primary structure of the Meridian Colony Ark and the lattice frame of the Gravitas Dock Barge that assembles it. His whipple-shield research has reduced shielding mass on the Odyssey Deep Explorer by 18 percent.

He is a frequent conference speaker on the structural limits of very large spacecraft.

Haruto joined Halcyon straight out of graduate school and spent his first years on the Kestrel airframe, which taught him, he says, that a small ship forgives nothing. He leads a reading group on historical shipbuilding and believes the lessons of ocean-going vessels still apply to hulls measured in kilometres.
