Kronos Ice Consortium
Water is the most traded commodity beyond Mars, and the Kronos Ice Consortium sells more of it than anyone else. Founded on Titan in 2156, Kronos operates harvesting camps on the south-polar fractures of Enceladus and sells potable water, oxygen feedstock and propellant-grade hydrogen to settlements as far sunward as Ceres.
The consortium flies eleven Tempest Ice Runners, each loading 38,000 tonnes of ice into an insulated 410-metre hull. The Tempest's nuclear thermal engine runs on hydrogen cracked from its own cargo, using about 7.6 tonnes per 100 AU, which means a ship never has to buy fuel on the outbound leg. With a 160 AU range and a flight crew of three, a Tempest can make the Saturn-to-Ceres run and back on a single loading. Each one cost Kronos 520 million credits.
Three Nimbus Gas Skimmers dive into Saturn's upper atmosphere to top up the fleet's hydrogen reserves, and two Polaris Relay Tenders keep the consortium's chain of navigation beacons alive between Titan and the inner system.
Kronos crews like to say that a Tempest is a water tank with an engine bolted on, and they mean it as a compliment. The hull's insulation keeps cargo frozen for the eighteen-month haul, and losses to sublimation are below one percent per voyage.
Kronos is best known for the 2186 Ceres Drought Relief, when it diverted six Tempests to Ceres after a reactor fault knocked out the dwarf planet's main ice refinery. Valentina Rojas, Halcyon's outer-system account executive, is based at our Titan office and has supported the consortium since its first Tempest order.
